Emerging Markets mit solider Oktober-Performance

Global emerging markets made further gains in October as investors continued to react positively to the US Federal Reserve’s decision to maintain, for the time being, its support for financial markets. There was little differentiation between regions with share prices higher across the board though India, having suffered the most earlier in the year, outperformed significantly. After a period of some volatility, local currencies and commodity prices saw little net movement over the month. Fiera Capital | 18.11.2013 11:25 Uhr

The performance of the portfolio was supported by positive developments from a number of its positions. These included NMDC, India's single largest iron ore producer, which reported a 19% fall in net profit over the year to the company’s first half. NMDC’s share price rose 17% however as a bottoming out in iron ore prices and continued volume growth suggested that NMDC had the potential for a multiple re-rating. NMDC also increased its interim dividend by 50% and further hikes are probable.

Elsewhere, Mexico provided some support with real estate group Fibra UNO 13% higher, bouncing back from a period of weakness, and proving its position as the leading REIT in Mexico as it closed out three deals at reasonable valuations, growing its portfolio and supporting future dividend payments. The Saudi petrochemicals group SIIG put on 15%, supported by a 3% rise in net income over the year to the third quarter thanks to a strong performance from its joint ventures with Chevron.

Changes to the portfolio over the month included the addition of a new holding in Astro Malaysia, a leading consumer media entertainment group in Malaysia and Southeast Asia active in Pay-TV, Radio, Publications and Digital Media. With a penetration rate in excess of 50% of Malaysian TV households, the company has recently announced a series of price increases that should see revenue grow strongly; a programme to replace its set top boxes is also coming to an end.

Divestments included the Brazili an electricity transmission group TAESA and the Qatari holding company Industries Qatar, the latter following a disappointing earnings update with its fertilizer and steel businesses suffering marked falls in profitability.
