TOKYO -- Japan slid to a new low in an annual digital competitiveness ranking released Thursday, underscoring the nation's struggle to nurture talent and fund technological advances.

The country sank to 32nd place out of 64 economies rated in the new World Digital Competitiveness Ranking by Swiss business school International Institute for Management Development, down three notches from last year to its worst place since the list began in 2017.
