Only 0.25% of the total world water supply is usable for human consumption and it remains unevenly distributed. The United Nations estimates that the number of people who suffer from water scarcity will increase from 700 million in 2007 to over 3 billion by 2025. The demand for water is expected to increase rapidly due to the world population growth, changing eating habits and growing industrial needs. The imbalance between water supply and demand will continue to drive water prices up in order to finance increasing capital expenditure needs, especially in emerging markets.
Governments have started to recognise the historical underinvestment in water infrastructure worldwide. The need to build proper water infrastructures throughout the world that comply with tougher water regulation will attract investors to cost-efficient technologies.
Despite the impact on the sector due to the financial crisis, the outlook for water is promising. The global water market represents a USD 500bn opportunity growing at a stable 6% per annum.
Launched in 2000, the PF(LUX)-Water fund invests worldwide in companies that are involved in the entire water value chain. Its growth prospects are very solid, with low accessibility for investors to tap into this asset class and a large number of under-researched stocks within the segment. Since it´s inception in 2000 the PF(LUX)-Water posted a performance of +26.2% compared to the MSCI World Index which had a negative performance of -28.1% during the same period.
