Amongst significant share price movements, not generally reflective of any particular corporate newsflow, the Russian oil services firm C.A.T. oil put on 26%. Together with Eurasia Drilling, 7% higher, these companies provide exposure to Russia’s oil and gas industry but without the regulatory risk or prospect of government interference associated with the likes of Rosneft and Gazprom. The Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus was 13% higher with the company generating significant growth and still valued at a discount to other comparable European carriers. On the downside, International Personal Finance fell 7% with its third quarters numbers meeting rather than beating expectations as has been the case recently. The consumer lender with a focus on Central Europe still stands up almost 50% over the year to date however.
A new holding in Tinkoff Credit Systems, an innovative provider of credit cards and online retail financial services in Russia, has been added to the portfolio following a successful initial public offering. The company is privately owned and can be expected to be run more in line with the interests of its shareholders, with few of the regulatory or governance concerns that bedevil its state-owned peers. The position in Tinkoff was funded by a partial divestment of the Russian holding company Sistema, where the discount to net asset value has narrowed significantly. Sistema’s main holding, the telecommunications group MTS, has prospered as it has focused on creating value for shareholders, not least through maintaining an attractive dividend payout.
Elsewhere, PKP Cargo, the rail freight subsidiary of the Polish state railway PKP, came to the market in Warsaw’s largest share offer so far this year as the government sold around 50% of the company for approximately USD 500 million. The issue was deemed a success but was not sufficiently attractive to tempt the participation of the portfolio, being a lower quality version of the already held Russian Globaltrans. Historically, IPOs have had a mixed record across the region and it has usually been preferable to see how trading develops in the aftermarket before making any decision to invest. There are further issues in the pipeline over the remainder of the year, with the portfolio continuing to take a cautious approach
